Cape cops drop charge against NZ sportsman

Under-20 rugby player was accused of raping a woman at hotel

South African police will not prosecute a New Zealand Under-20 rugby player who was accused of raping a woman hours after playing in the world junior championship final.

The New Zealand Rugby Union says it’s been informed that police have ended their investigation of Nathan Harris, who was accused of raping the 22-year-old woman in Cape Town in June.

Harris denied the allegations from the outset and said he was pleased and relieved to be cleared, but “disappointed that my special experience with the New Zealand Under-20 was marred by this allegation”.

He acknowledged he broke team rules by bringing the woman back to the players’ hotel following New Zealand’s defeat by host South Africa in the final.

The NZRU said it considered the matter closed.
