SIYABONGA Sangweni was the biggest winner on a night of glitz and glamour when Orlando Pirates celebrated another successful season with their top-notch awards event at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

The Bafana Bafana defender rode home in a new car and R140,000, his prizes for both the player of the season and on-line player of the season awards.

Sangweni got the second biggest cheer on the night after club chairman Irvin Khoza, who paid tribute to club legends such as Kaizer Motaung, Jomo Sono, Russia Jacobs and Sam "Baboon Shepherd" Shabangu.

In his first season with the Buccaneers after joining from Lamontville Golden Arrows, Sangweni contributed hugely to a remarkable season, and was a deserving winner.

"It's an honour for me to receive these awards and I'm happy with my achievements," said Sangweni.

Other winners on the night included Oupa Manyisa, who scooped both the player's player of the season award and the best goal award.

The save of the season accolade went to Senzo Meyiwa, while Benni McCarthy earned the top scorer award. The newcomer of the season award went to Thabo Matlaba, while skipper Lucky Lekgwathi earned the chairman's award.

The event was graced by legends, dignitaries and politicians including ANC veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and former ANC Youth League spokesman Floyd Shivambu, who all celebrated the individual accomplishments of players and the club's 75-year legacy.

Among the legends who attended Johnny "Black Sunday" Masegela, Kagiso "Zero My Hero" Mogale, Steve Lekoelea, Bruce Ramokadi, Dennis Lota, Josep Ngake, Eugene Zwane and Edward Motale.
