Letsholonyane injured his right knee when Bafana played Zambia

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane says he will hear from a specialist on Thursday as to  the extent of his knee injury.

“I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow, and that’s when I’ll find out how serious it is,” Letsholonyane said on Wednesday.

“No one wants to be injured but unfortunately it’s also part of the job description of the sport we are playing.

“I’m not happy but there is nothing that I can do, my focus now is on getting better.”

Letsholonyane injured his right knee in the first of South Africa’s two practice matches last week — a 1-1 draw against Zambia at Rand Stadium.

The injury forced the interim national captain to miss this past  weekend’s practise tie against Ghana in Rustenburg.

He is now fighting to be available for the second half of the Premiership season and the national squad’s friendly international against Senegal next month.

A disappointed Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic seemingly lashed out at Bafana on the club’s website - but was quick to add that the Soweto giants would continue to support Bafana when their players were called upon.

Here's what Vermezovic said:

“Reneilwe will be out for the rest of the season due to injury.

“It is not the first time that a player from Chiefs has come back from Bafana with an injury.

“It is a blow for us.

“We will have to look at other players in the squad to fill the gap left by him.”

Despite the anti-climax, Letsholonyane said he remained proud of  the distinction of having led out his country against Zambia.

“It can be a friendly game, a practise game or whatever,” he said. “For me, being asked to lead the national team will forever be an achievement. It’s hard to explain what it feels like but it was a major achievement.

“I won’t forget it even if I don’t get to play again.

“It’s also reward for all the effort that I think I’ve put in.”

The Premiership will resume in mid-February at the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament starting this weekend in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. - Sapa
