Bafana renew their rivalry with Zambia

THE last time Bafana Bafana and Zambia met in Cape Town in 2007, Christopher "Tsunami" Katongo almost single-handedly destroyed the national side as he scored all three goals in a 3-1 victory.

That victory in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier was enough to see Chipolopolo finish on top of their group and subsequently qualify for tournament in Ghana in 2009. Bafana qualified as the second best team.

Tomorrow at Rand Stadium in Johannesburg at 4.30pm, Zambia and South Africa will renew their rivalry in an Afcon warm-up match for the visitors.

"I know it is very difficult for people to forget that one (the match in Cape Town)," said Katongo, who is now plying his trade in China.

"I always give my best when I play and always want to be on the winning side. When I left South Africa in 2009, I scored 15 goals midway through the first round.

"I left for Denmark and nobody surpassed that record. I now need to set a new record," said Katongo, who played for Jomo Cosmos before going to join Brondby.

He said tomorrow's game was an opportunity to identify the areas where they are still lacking before going to the Afcon finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea that start on January 21.

"We would have loved to play against a stronger Bafana Bafana squad, but it is unfortunate the game does not fall in the Fifa calendar," he said. "It is a sad moment that Bafana Bafana have not qualified for this tournament for the second time in a row. I can't understand this because South Africa has all the resources.

"Zambia has an abundance of quality players and we are looking forward to doing well during the tournament. I hope Bafana Bafana will do well during the 2013 Afcon."'

Katongo is planning to end his career in South Africa but declined to name the club, except to say, "I want to go where they win competitions".

Bafana take on Ghana in another practice match at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng on Sunday at 4pm.

Both matches will not be televised after they were downgraded to practice matches.
