Brazil 'trail SA in World Cup'

FIVE-TIMES World Cup winners Brazil might be considered the high priests of soccer, who set the benchmark for the world as to how "The Beautiful Game" should be performed on the pitch.

But when it comes to planning and organising a World Cup tournament the "Samba Nation" trails South Africa.

This, at least, is the view of former Bafana Bafana coach and Orlando Pirates director of development, Augusto Palacios - who recently returned from Brazil where he guided his team to seventh position in a under-17 international tournament.

Thirty months before Brazil are due to stage the 2014 World Cup, Palacios believes South Africa were advanced in the preparations for the 2010 World Cup.

"Brazil, however, seem hardly to have started advertising the event, which is coming to their country in 2014."

Palacios believes that with the considerable influx of tourists expected in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, airports at several of the World Cup cities appear below par to handle the heavy load.

"And the roads between major cities are no better - particularly when you take into account the large distances involved in travelling," he said.
