Birds up for Ziwa Mo fight

NO DOUBT: Birds' Siya Sangweni
NO DOUBT: Birds' Siya Sangweni

REJUVENATED Moroka Swallows want to fly away with the Telkom Knockout trophy, and they are convinced that an extended cup campaign won't derail their Absa Premiership title aspirations.

Swallows begin their Ziwa Mo challenge with a home match against Mamelodi Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday (kickoff is at 8.15pm).

"We have a score to settle with Sundowns after they embarrassed us 4-0 in a league match," Swallows brand manager Siya Sangweni said yesterday.

"The mandate of the team is to win a trophy and challenge for the league title this season after we flirted with relegation last season. I strongly believe the team is well on track to accomplish this mission.

"We go into this game against Sundowns in the right mental frame after our win against Bidvest Wits at the weekend. Our coach Gordon Igesund has successfully instilled a winning mentality in the team.

"As management, we were so happy to see the team bouncing back to win the match against Wits after being down 1-0 for the better part of the first half.

"Our players now believe in themselves, which is something that has been lacking in the team. It is good to see that the players have an appetite for goals.

"At the beginning of the season many people were poking fun at us by singing that we are turning Swallows into an old- age home but we made it clear to our critics one cannot buy experience.

"Gordon has nicely blended youth with experience and the results are there for everybody to see," said Sangweni.

The Beautiful Birds will be without suspended veteran midfielder MacBeth Sibaya but good news for their supporters is that young striker Augustine Leonard is back from injury.

Leonard is expected to form a deadly combination with Siyabonga Nomvethe up front.
