Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper joins Ajax

FORMER Liverpool and Everton goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has been given the green light by the Department of Home Affairs to play for Ajax Cape Town.

Westerveld looks set to make his debut against Jomo Cosmos in an Absa Premiership match in the Mother City on Friday night.

Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg is over the moon with the availability of the highly experienced Westerveld, who has been training with the club for almost a month.

Stekelenburg's excitement stems from the fact that Urban Warriors were humiliated 4-0 in their last game two weeks ago by lowly placed AmaZulu.

"The club has been waiting a long time for the paperwork. We were very happy when he signed because we rate him highly as a player. He comes with a lot of experience and we think he will play an important role in the team for the remainder of our season," Stekelenburg said.

Just like his predecessor Hans Vonk, Westerveld will also help guide and mentor youngsters like Lebogang Manyama, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Khama Billiat.

From Cosmos' camp, owner-coach Jomo Sono is still oozing confidence that Ezenkosi will soon be out of the relegation quagmire. "We have been playing well but the problem is that goals are eluding us, there is always the first time," said Sono.
