ORGANISERS of the Extreme Africa Championship have promised fans of mixed martial arts a real treat at the Big Top Arena tomorrow night, when the tournament celebrates its 10-year milestone.
"In a fitting celebration of our 10th event, the fight card will feature the best MMA action that Africa has to offer," fight publicist Philippa Harvey said yesterday.
The welterweight title bout between champion Adam "The Prodigy" Speechly and Dallas Jakobi will top the bill.
But the fight that could steal the thunder from the main bout is the clash between Demarte "The Wolf" Pena and Leo "King" Gloss for the vacant lightweight title.
Pena is 21 years old and fights out of Undisputed Fight Club in Pretoria. He was born in Angola and came to South Africa shortly after his father, General Arlindo Pena, chief of staff in the Angolan rebel movement Unita, was poisoned during the Angolan civil war.
Arlindo sought treatment in South Africa but died in 1998.
His son began training for mixed martial arts in 2005, aided by a background in muay thai, karate, judo and Shaolin kung fu, said Harvey.
She quoted him as saying: "This title shot is a dream come true. I'm confident that I have what it takes to win. I have a great team behind me and we've got the perfect plan to take down 'The King'.
"I have a lot of respect for Leo because he comes highly prepared and he's able to push the pace with his tried and tested style.
"Although he's had many more fights than me, what I may lack in experience I make up for in heart and determination."
Martin 'The Punisher" van Staden takes on Dino 'The Lion" Bagattin while Nolan "Real Deal" Swanepoel comes up against Leon "Iron Lion" Mynhardt.
Sean 'The Monster" Robinson will take on JPJoubert in a highly anticipated light heavyweight clash. In total this tournaments boasts 13 bouts and the action gets under way at 6pm.
