Van Blerk fit to race again

SOUTH Africa's elite women runners will be in action in the Spar Women's Challenge in Centurion on Saturday morning.

Just over 20000 women from South Africa and neighbouring countries will line up for this prestigious event, starting at 8am at SuperSport Park.

Nedbank Green Dream Team athlete Irvette van Blerk, who has recovered from the injuries she sustained when struck by a car recently, is back to defend her title.

Van Blerk, the SA 10km champ, must brace herself for a stiff challenge from the likes of Rutendo Nyhora, who was second last year, Zintle Xiniwe, Christine Kalmer, Ntombesintu Mfunzi, Catherine Skosana and Lebo and Lebohang Phalula.

Johannesburg-based Van Blerk leads the Grand Prix with 76 points, with Capetonian Xiniwe second on 62 points followed by Annerien van Schalkwyk. Van Schalkwyk and Rene Kalmer will not run on Sunday as they have been selected to represent South Africa at the World Championships marathon event in Daegu, South Korea.

After Sunday's race, the runner with the most Grand Prix points will receive R60000, the runner-up R30000 and third-placed woman R15000.

- The Komatsu half marathon and 10km road race will be run in Kempton Park on October 2. The event hosted by the Rainbow Athletic Club starts and ends at Barnard Stadium.
