Province menace Cheetahs

FREE State Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow will only play a quarter of the match in tomorrow's Currie Cup clash against Western Province in Bloemfontein, but it will be an important 20 minutes in the immediate future of South African rugby.

If the outstanding openside flank comes through the contest without a recurrence of a nagging Achilles injury, he will feature in the remainder of the Tri-Nations for the Boks.

"The hamstring is fine now and I'm ready to go," Brüssow said. "Over the past few weeks it was tight and I wasn't able to run at full speed, which is why I didn't play on the away leg of the Tri-Nations.

"But I ran this week, the leg is feeling really good and I just want to play."

Brüssow missed most of last season with a knee injury and this year he only managed five appearances for the Cheetahs in Super Rugby because of a the continuing problems with his hamstring.

Western Province are flying high after thrashing the Bulls last weekend and will feel that they need to carry the momentum forward this weekend to consolidate their good start to the campaign.

In tomorrow's other big clash the Blue Bulls host the Golden Lions at Loftus, in what has also become a critical game for the Pretoria side.

Two losses in three matches have put the 23-time champions firmly on the back foot but this week seven returning Springboks will bolster the team.

An all-Bok front row of Dean Greyling, Chiliboy Ralepelle and Werner Kruger will give the pack some grunt, while Flip van der Merwe's presence in the second row indicates that Bulls' tight five should have the edge.

The Lions, who currently top the table, go into the match with momentum after three consecutive wins but the Bulls represent their biggest challenge so far.

Lions coach John Mitchell also displayed his ruthless side by axing scrumhalf Jano Vermaak from the squad after the player announced he was joining the Bulls next year.

The unbeaten Sharks travel to Kimberley tonight to meet Griquas in what has always been a tricky encounter. In tonight's other game the Platinum Leopards host the Pumas in Potchefstroom.
