Scorpions book seats to Argentina

The Soweto side came into the tournament as underdogs, but they had a brilliant run

SCORPIONS FC are the new kings of the Kia Champ into the Arena Tournament at the Randburg Sports Club, beating former champions Randburg Spurs 5-1 yesterday in a one-sided game.

Scorpions, from Soweto, will leave for Argentina on a sponsored trip from July 22 to 25, where they will compete against 12 other international teams.

The winners will be crowned the world amateur five-a-side champions.

The Soweto side came into the tournament as underdogs, but after their brilliant run in their qualifying games, the stage was set for a thrilling final against last year's champions.

Spurs didn't know what hit them. It was clear from midway through the first half that they were overwhelmed by the dazzling skills of the Scorpions.

With five goals in the bag, the Scorpions mocked their opponents with their showboating skills, and held on to their four-goal lead until the final whistle.

The captain and goalkeeper of the Scorpions, Nqobile Hlongwane, says they came into the game looking for a win. "We came to the tournament intent to try our best, but we didn't know that we would actually take the crown.

"We are looking forward to the global event since in our whole team none of the players has ever travelled outside the country, so this is a sweet victory for us. In Argentina we aim to show the world how we play soccer in South Africa," said an excited Hlongwane.

Former Kaizer Chiefs and ex South African National Team player, Jabulani Mendu of Spurs, was 'a good sport'. He said they lost to a better team and quickly congratulated Scorpions.

Mendu says he believes the score does not give the true reflection of the game. "We missed a lot of chances and they caught us on the breaks. It was always two against one or three against one, relying on their incredible pace and fitness. They train every day and we don't, but we lost to a better team nevertheless," he commented.

A satisfied Ray Levin, chief executive of the sponsors, praised the winners and wished them well in the world event. He encouraged Scorpions to train hard and go to South America to enjoy the tournament and return home with the trophy.

In a celebrity exhibition game, the SHOUT Foundation Team beat the Kia Motors Invitational Team 3-2 on penalties, and received a R20,000 donation for their efforts.
