Marathon ahead: Yeye

KAIZER Chiefs launched their new jersey in Soweto yesterday and midfielder Reneilwe "Yeye" Letsholonyane stressed that their priority next season was to dethrone blood rivals Orlando Pirates of their Premiership title.

The function at Nike Football Training Centre was attended by some Chiefs players, officials and various guests.

Letsholonyane said their aim was to make everybody associated with Chiefs proud next season. "We started with medical tests on Monday and everything is going according to plan. We are geared up for a season that looks set to be more competitive and compelling," Letsholonyane said.

"We have to start the season well and maintain the winning momentum to keep us going through the entire campaign. The league is a marathon and the most important thing is consistency," said the former Jomo Cosmos star.

Letsholonyane's sentiments were echoed by goalkeeper Itumeleng "Spider" Khune.

"We expect the same clubs who were in the running for the league title last season to repeat the challenge, and of course Pirates will start as favourites after winning the treble," Khune said.

"Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town have new coaches who want to impress, so the fans can brace themselves for yet another nail-biting season."

Defender Tlou "Spanner" Molekwane said he was hoping his move to Amakhosi will afford him more caps for Bafana Bafana to enhance his chances of securing an overseas contract.

Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung, who confirmed that striker Lehlohonolo Majoro had signed a three-year deal with the club from AmaZulu, said: "We want to see all the titles coming to Soweto next season, and we are busy creating space in our cabinet for trophies in Naturena."

Chiefs play their first game against Tottenham Hotspur in the Vodacom Challenge at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo, on July 16.
