Safa to kill Bafana for good

THE South African Football Association has started the process to get rid of the nickname Bafana Bafana.

At its national executive committee in Johannesburg on Saturday, Safa appointed its president, Kirsten Nematandani, Danny Jordaan and Alpha Mchunu to oversee the process.

Safa has lost legal battles over the ownership of the Bafana Bafana trademark to businessman Stanton Woodrush, who has reportedly made a lot of money using the trademark for his clothing range in the build-up to the 2010 World Cup.

Woodrush registered the name, coined by the Sowetan sport department - former sport editor Molefi Mika, his deputy Sello Rabothata and S'busiso Mseleku - soon after South Africa rejoined Fifa.

Nematandani said: "We are going to involve South Africans to come up with suggestions for the new nickname."

Saturday's meeting also resolved to do a feasibility study on the Transnet Football School of Excellence.

This was after Safa was informed that the parastatal wants to hand over the school, which has produced the likes of Steven Pienaar and Masilo Modubi, to the federation.

Safa are also looking at the possibility of acquiring its own land to build a football sports centre. Furthermore, Safa will hold a Soccer Indaba at the end of March - Safa celebrates its 20-year anniversary on March 23 2011.

Safa top brass also endorsed the appointment of Pinky Lehoko as its acting chief executive officer.

Lehoko replaced Leslie Sedibe who left Safa after complaining that certain soccer administrators were sabotaging him.
