Soccer muddle

BAFANA Bafana coach Gordon Igesund's decision to include Jomo Sono in his advisory"reference group" is baffling.

It is common cause that on football Sono is a shadow of his former self. In his heyday he was no doubt a great player, one of the greatest soccer exports this country has ever made, but he is a failed coach.

Not a single coach starts the Premier Soccer League season with only one thing in mind: avoiding relegation. Yet Sono has been consistent in this regard.

As to what it is that asuccessful, title-winning coach like Igesund can learn from Sono only the soccer gods know. Sono was part of the panel that interviewed Igesund for the job.

That Igesund and Safa do not see the conflict of interest in this arrangement is perhaps another indication of how the country's football authorities are capable of hurling insults at the soccer community.
