Netcare shame

THE Netcare group should hang its head in shame that it had run an illegal kidney transplant scheme in their KwaZulu-Natal operations for close to three years.

What is even more deplorable is that in their contravention of the Human Tissues Act, they had even taken kidneys from minors.

The least we expect from corporate citizens like Netcare is that they would not knowingly aid and abet crime on any of their premises.

Netcare owes the nation a much more serious apology than the total R7820000 fine slapped on them by the Durban regional court. Their culpability goes far deeper than this slap on the wrist.

Each of the 102 illegal operations they performed between June 2001 and November 2003 represents flagrant disrespect for the country's laws. For these crimes, they are no better than backstreet abortionists.
