Two buses have been torched and another one damaged during an early Wednesday morning protest in Atteridgeville‚ west of Pretoria.

Police said about 150 residents embarked on a violent protest in the area‚ which saw the burning and damaging of the buses‚ belonging to Atteridgeville Bus Service.

Constable Tumisang Moloto said the incident occurred around 2am.

“They (are) allegedly complaining about new housing developments at Ext 6‚ which resulted in an eviction. No injuries and arrests have been reported. Police will continue to monitor and assess the situation‚” Moloto said.

Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said in a separate statement that the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) had intervened‚ “following scenes of aggression by a clique in Brazzaville — Pretoria West” who had wanted to illegally occupy RDP houses.

“The TMPD received reports of a group behaving in a disruptive and disorderly manner in the community of Brazzaville and responded accordingly. Upon reaching the scene‚ the unruly group had already torched two buses

“The City expresses complete disapproval of the actions by this deviant group that has now robbed the community of transportation service.

“In addition‚ actions of anarchy will not be tolerated as the targeted houses are meant for beneficiaries that qualify and had applied for them‚” he said in the statement.

The TMPD and SAPS are on site today to oversee and ensure order prevails in Brazzaville‚ he added.

No injuries have been reported and no arrests made.

The TMPD asked the broader community to report the instigators of the attempted occupation of RDP houses to the police on 012 358 7095/6

In April last year‚ the City of Tshwane obtained a court interdict against six residents of the Brazzaville informal settlement — which has been in existence for two decades — after accusing them of inciting the community to riot against planned relocations from the area‚ the Sowetan reported. The municipality said then the relocations were part of a progressive eradication informal settlements.
