While Capetonians are on high alert‚ fearing for the worst amid a raging storm‚ their political leaders are preparing to debate the “ANC’s impact on Western Cape drought”.

On Thursday the provincial legislature will debate a motion proposed by Beverley Schfer‚ the DA’s Western Cape spokesperson on economic opportunities‚ tourism and agriculture.

In a statement released on Wednesday‚ Schfer blamed the ANC for failure to ensure water security since it came to power nationally in 1994.

“I have motioned for the Western Cape provincial parliament to debate the state of disaster in the province as a result of the severity and magnitude of the current severe hydrological drought‚” she said.

Last month‚ the DA-run Western Cape government declared the province a disaster area in a bid to introduce emergency water schemes in the face of the province’s worst drought since 1904.

“As part of this debate‚ I will be outlining and discussing the national Department of Water and Sanitation’s outright failure to adequately ensure water security in the Western Cape since the ANC came into power in 1994‚” said Schfer.

“In addition to this‚ I will be highlighting the measures the current DA-led administration has been obliged to take in order to compensate for the ANC’s failures in the Western Cape in this regard.”
