'I hope the SABC will pay our artists their royalties' - Tony Kgoroge

Veteran actor and writer Tony Kgoroge lambasted the SABC and government over the exploitation of artists in the industry during his tribute speech at Joe Mafela’s memorial on Thursday afternoon.

Tony was one of many speakers who were invited by Joe’s family to honour the veteran actor.

He said that Joe was one of the artists who rose above exploitation in the industry. “Even though Ntate Joe Mafela did not escape exploitation‚ it is encouraging to see how he rose above it‚” Tony said.

The actor added that it was time for artists to tell their own stories and then directed his statements to SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago who took to the podium minutes before.

“Ntate Kaizer‚ I hope the SABC will pay our artists their royalties‚” he said.

Tony also appealed for the industry to stop exploiting artists.

Hundreds of friends‚ fans and family members have gathered at the Joburg Theatre to pay tribute to Joe Mafela‚ who was killed in a car accident on Saturday night.

It has been an emotional day for those close to Joe‚ who have spent the day hearing fond memories about the legacy Joe leaves behind.
