Hijacker dead after gun battle in Johannesburg suburb

A hijacking suspect was shot dead on Tuesday after a heavy exchange of gunfire in Kew‚ Johannesburg.

A second suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found in a critical condition‚ according to Emer-G-med spokesperson Max Cohen.

The two suspects had reportedly hijacked a Huyndai van and were being chased by Rentrack tracking recovery guards. The suspects opened fire with automatic rifles‚ and the guards shot back‚ killing one of the hijackers.

The second suspect was stabilised at the scene by Emer-G-Med Advanced Life Support paramedics before being transported to a Johannesburg hospital for further treatment‚ said Cohen.

Police are at the scene‚ and have closed off 9th Road between 1st and 2nd avenues.
