Protesting Alex students block roads

Students at the Central Johannesburg College's Alexandra campus embarked on protests on Monday morning over their unhappiness about the college's decision to move some courses to other campuses.

“They are moving some of our courses to the Ellis Park campus. They built this campus for students in Alexandra. Some of us can’t afford to go to town every day‚” said Phila Shezi‚ a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command at the college.

“Other students have not been able to register. We don’t have all the equipment we need. There's nothing here‚ we don’t even have internet‚” she added.

Students on Monday morning blocked roads‚ including London Road‚ one of the main roads running through the township.

Alexandra police spokesperson Captain Ali Kodisang confirmed that the students blocked roads.

“There has been unrest. I have just arrived on the scene‚” he said. – TMG Digital
