Lectures continue at UKZN as protesting students and cops clash

Police and students clashed at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville campus on Monday morning after protester overturned a private security vehicle.

According to eThekwini metro police spokesman Superintendent Sbonelo Mchunu‚ there was a confrontation between some students‚ who threw stones‚ and police.

“Police had been deployed on campus since early on Monday morning after receiving information that things were not going to be okay‚” said Mchunu.

Students gathered in the quad and surrounded a parked private security vehicle before turning it on its side

 A UKZN student who asked not to be named said she had been in class when she heard that some students were protesting on the Westville campus.

“Some of my classmates did not attend lectures because of the strike. There are many students outside classes‚ although lectures are continuing‚” she said. – TMG Digital
