An Economic Freedom Fighters MPL wants answers after his niece died a few weeks after collapsing at the school.

Sharing the story in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature this week‚ Mgcini Tshwaku asked Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to investigate the incident which happened at a school in Germiston in July.

“My niece‚ Anna Pamela Annah Keyise‚ collapsed at Afrikaanse Hoërskool. The principal did not bother to call an ambulance. Anna’s father‚ who works approximately two hours away from the school‚ was called to come and attend to the child‚” Tshwaku said of the 14-year-old.

“Upon his arrival‚ Anna was covered with a blanket in a sickroom‚ with no one looking after her and froth coming out of her mouth. He immediately took her to the Germiston hospital‚ where she later regained consciousness‚ but passed on six weeks after from contracting meningitis.

“Upon her death‚ no representative from her school came to the funeral. They did not even send a postcard. The principal told me that they had a tournament that weekend. The parents know this will not bring their child back‚ but want to ensure that this kind of negligence does not happen to another‚” he added.

Tshwaku asked the MEC‚ who said the department is investigating the matter‚ to clarify whose responsibility is it to call an ambulance when a child is sick at school.

“My sincere condolences to you and your family‚” Lesufi said in reply.

“This is a very unfortunate incident and I have since appointed an independent team to investigate all these allegations and‚ when the findings are presented to us‚ we will make a requisition to represent them to you and take appropriate actions.”

Tshwaku said it been a very traumatic experience to his family.

“We buried her. It was very painful. The child was very young and very playful.”
