Petrol tanker explodes near Tshwane depot

Total South Africa has confirmed that a fuel delivery truck caught fire in the parking area outside the Waltloo terminal in Pretoria at about 8am on Sunday morning.

“As health‚ safety and the environment is of the utmost importance to Total‚ our emergency response management was immediately activated. The emergency services were called to the scene‚ the area was cordoned off and the fire extinguished‚ “ spokesperson Nadia Vosloo said.

She confirmed that there were no injuries and that Total SA was working with the authorities to establish the cause of the fire.

According to various reports‚ the fuel tanker was laden with about 55‚000 litres when it exploded and burst into flames.

Tshwane metro emergency services were quoted as saying that fire fighters had been able to cool down the fires using foam lines and eventually extinguish the blaze.

A thick pall of black smoke hung over the area.
