Two held for attempted murder of traffic cops

Two suspects have been arrested for the shooting of two traffic officers in Khayelitsha‚ Western Cape police said on Friday.

The men‚ aged 26 and 30‚ will face charges of attempted murder and armed robbery when they appear in Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Princess Nkomo and Mandisa Plaatjie had their cellphones and wallets stolen last week when they were attacked while sitting in their car outside a shop in Harare.

Plaatjie was hit in the arm and Nkomo in the stomach. Plaatjie drove them to hospital‚ where they had surgery.

The officers were honoured on Thursday by Western Cape Transport MEC Donald Grant‚ who wished them a speedy recovery and thanked them for their bravery.

“I’m glad we didn’t have to light candles for these two officers. The bottom line is there’s a lot of danger out there‚” he said at the ceremony in Athlone.

The officers believe they were attacked for their firearms‚ but they were unarmed.

“Unfortunately there is a perception out there that all policemen carry firearms. But some of them do not‚ and that is a choice they make themselves‚” said Grant.

The officers‚ based in Athlone‚ are expected to return to work after a three-month recovery period.
