Teacher filmed beating matric learners suspended with immediate effect

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education Mthandeni Dlungwana on Tuesday “ordered the suspension” of teacher who was filmed beating learners at the Prince Tokotoko High School in Nongoma.

The video‚ which went viral after being posted on Facebook‚ shows the matric girls holding on to the back of a chair while being hit with a stick on the buttocks.

It appears the video‚ which was uploaded by Makhi Zihlangu on June 21‚ was made by one of the pupils in the class where the corporal punishment happened.

The Times was alerted to the video by education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi on Monday‚ who said Dlungwana would visit the school on Tuesday.

Mahlambi related that a “visibly angry” Dlungwana said during that visit: “What has happened at this school is very disappointing. We want to make it clear that we cannot allow it to happen again.

“Our role here is to make sure that we build and nature these young stars to become better people who will be able to lead this country in future. We should not be abusing them. In fact we should be fighting for their welfare.”

Dlungwana “apologised to the learners and parents for the behaviour of the teacher”‚ added Mahlambi‚ who said the suspended educator was “expected to appear before a disciplinary hearing soon”.

The video starts with one girl being hit twice on the buttocks‚ before walking away in pain. But the teacher grabs her hand and drags her back over to the chair and hits her two more times‚ before making her turn around and hitting her on her hands three times.

The teacher then pulls another girl over and hits her six times in quick succession on the buttocks. This happens to another three pupils‚ while some of the pupils in the class can be heard laughing.
