The young man accused of slaughtering his family with an axe did not expect he would have to spend a night in a police cell after his arrest‚ his girlfriend has disclosed.
Even the arrest came as a surprise to Henri van Breda‚ his girlfriend Danielle Janse van Rensburg‚ a fellow student at a Cape Town chef school‚ said in an interview with You magazine.
Henri’s lawyers were alerted to an imminent arrest and persuaded him to hand himself over to police in Stellenbosch on June 13.
“He was a bit shocked‚ but he was strong‚” she said of her boyfriend of four months.
The court appearance was easier than the night in a police cell‚ she told You magazine.
Henri‚ 21‚ had a cell to himself and was allowed his own clothing.
“At least he had a beanie and gloves and stuff because it was a cold night‚” she said‚ adding he had told her that his concern had been for her more than for himself because he knew she would be worrying about him.
After a night in a cell‚ he appeared in court for a bail hearing and was released on R100‚000.
He appeared calm and exchanged a smile with his girlfriend in the gallery‚ seated next to his uncle‚ André du Toit.
Wealthy businessman Martin van Breda‚ his wife‚ Teresa‚ and son Rudi were killed in the attack at their home in the Cape Winelands in the early hours of January 27 last year. The couple’s daughter‚ Marli‚ 17‚ was severely injured during the attack and spent months recovering in hospital.
Janse van Rensburg also disclosed to You magazine that Henri still needed to digest the fact that‚ following his arrest‚ he is not allowed to speak to some family members – notably his sister – because they may be called as witnesses in the trial.
She said‚ though‚ that the Van Breda family were supporting him and believed his version of an intruder who had attacked his parents and siblings on that bloody night.
