Terrorists should not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms: NRA

America’s National Rifle Association (NRA) has come out in support of regulations to prevent people on terror watch lists from buying guns.

Their statement comes following a meeting with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing.

“If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement‚ the government should be allowed to immediately go to court‚ block the sale‚ and arrest the terrorist.

“At the same time‚ due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed‚” the NRA said in a statement.

This statement comes after a gunman fired upon a gay pride event in Orlando‚ Florida‚ killing 49 people.

The gunman‚ Omar Mateen‚ made multiple calls to 911 emergency services during his rampage‚ which he used to declare his allegiance to various Islamist militant groups‚ some of which are at odds with one another. He also called a local 24-hour cable news channel‚ News 13‚ the station revealed on its website on Wednesday.

Matthew Gentili‚ who was the producer on duty at the time‚ described the call in an interview with the station.

“’I’m the shooter. It’s me. I am the shooter’‚” Gentili described Mateen as saying. Gentili said Mateen also told him‚ “’I did it for ISIS. I did it for the Islamic State’.”

The NRA’s response to this shooting is a contrast to how Houston-based lawyer Charles Cotton‚ listed as a national NRA board member on the gun lobby’s website at the time‚ responded to Dylan Roof massacring members of the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston.

The church’s pastor and Democratic state Senator Clementa Pinckney had voted against a law allowing concealed possession of handguns in restaurants‚ day-care centres and churches.

“Eight of his church members who might be alive if he had expressly allowed members to carry handguns in church are dead‚” Cotton wrote according to the Telegraph.
