British prime minister David Cameron could offer President Jacob Zuma a few tips on buying more modest cars for his wives: Cameron has just splashed out on a vehicle for his wife Samantha – a second hand‚ blue Nissan Micra.

Witney Used Car Centre owner Iain Harris got an unexpected call from Cameron’s security team last Friday saying that the prime minister wanted to view a vehicle at his showroom in Oxfordshire‚ reported the Guardian.

“Next thing I know‚ Mr Cameron and his security guards turned up‚ and I thought‚ this is actually happening‚” he said. “He looked it over just like any bloke off the street‚ but not someone with mechanical knowledge.”

Cameron returned the next day and used a card to pay for the car in full. It cost £1‚495 – about R34‚200.

“I didn’t give him a discount‚ he paid the screen price‚ got the log book‚ went to the post office to pay the tax and off he went‚” said Harris.

“And then I thought‚ I’ve just sold a car to the prime minister.”

Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko revealed on Tuesday that 10 luxury vehicles worth R9 million were bought for Zuma’s wives between 2013 and 2016‚ using the budget of the police department.
