The African National Congress has denied that President Jacob Zuma refused to step down during Friday’s deliberations after the findings of the Constitutional Court on Thursday.
This comes as Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema tweeted earlier on Friday that Zuma refused to step down as requested by deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa during the national top six meeting held in Pretoria.
“Those are manufactured stories. There was no such thing in the meeting of the officials. I’m emphasising to you that there was unanimity‚” Gwede Mantashe‚ secretary general of the ANC‚ told a news briefing on Friday night.
The national top six officials of the ANC met on Friday and deliberated on the judgment of the Constitutional Court.
The Constitutional Court on Thursday criticised the conduct of Zuma and the National Assembly in the Nkandla matter.
Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng found that the “remedial action” recommended by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela regarding construction at Zuma’s private residence at Nkandla was binding and that Zuma would have to pay back a portion of the money spent‚ based on a determination by the Treasury.
