Two homes suffered extensive damage in a fire at the Ultra City complex near the Mvoti toll gate on Sunday morning, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said on Sunday.

Properties in the vicinity have been cordoned off and evacuated after three trucks - one of them a tanker – as well as trailers caught alight.

Spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the fire appeared to have been contained and only one truck was still burning.

"There was also external heat damage to the plaza."

The fire was extinguished just before 14:00.

Massive flames and smoke billowed from the scene earlier after a fire started behind the Steers outlet at the complex.

Several explosions were heard, suspected to be caused by gas bottles stored on site.

Earlier the N2 northbound was closed to traffic, but has since been reopened.

No injuries were reported, McKenzie said.
