A bus station manager transformed into a deft midwife on Monday as he assisted a pregnant commuter in the delivery of a healthy baby boy.
Xolani Stofile, who was visiting personnel at the Omuramba Bus Station near Milnerton, had to call on his first aid experience.
Cape Town spokesperson on transport Councillor Brett Herron said Stofile had noticed that the woman had gone into labour.
"It was just after 13:00 when Xolani noticed the pregnant woman waiting at the door to the ladies bathroom, which was occupied at that stage. She seemed to be in pain and then her water broke unexpectedly," said Herron.
"Xolani stepped up like a professional mid-husband, removing her stockings just in time and making her comfortable as she was giving birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy," he said.
"Luckily the station was not busy at the time. The personnel sent for an ambulance who took the 31-year-old mother and newborn child to the Somerset Hospital.
"The father told us this morning that he is extremely grateful to Xolani and to all of those who assisted his wife and boy, whom they have named Gilbert Gabriel," he said.
Gilbert and his mother have been discharged from hospital and are now back at home in Joe Slovo.

Gilbert and his mother have been discharged from hospital and are now back at home in Joe Slovo.
