Some 365 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving in Mpumalanga since December 1.

By Monday, 527 crashes had been reported, in which 96 people died and 285 were injured, community safety, security and liaison department spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

MEC Vusi Shongwe called for the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to impose harsher sentences on traffic offenders.

"We cannot continue to count the bodies because some people are continuously ignoring the law. Our courts, through the department of justice, must help us mete out harsher sentences on those found in the wrong on the roads."

He said in most of the accidents, alcohol was to blame.
