Man held for armed robbery at Joburg clothing store

A man who allegedly helped rob a clothing shop at gunpoint in central Johannesburg has been arrested, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Six armed robbers pretended to be customers when entering the shop on the corner of Mooi and Pritchard Streets on Tuesday, said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

Two of them whipped out guns and held up staff members.

The robbers grabbed a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash from the till.

Mbele said people in the store screamed for help and the gang fired two shots as they fled. No one was injured.

“Security guards followed them and alerted police.”

They arrested a 39-year-old man at the corner of Bree and Troye Streets around 17:00.

A firearm with no serial number was recovered.

The man would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
