Off duty cop kills armed robber in dramatic Durban shooting

An off duty police officer came to the rescue of an Isipingo taxi driver who was being held at gunpoint on Wednesday night, shooting dead one of his attackers.

The dramatic shooting, which played out near the Boxer Super Store south of Durban, saw the officer confront a pair of robbers as they held the taxi driver against his will.

Police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, said the taxi driver had been walking back to his minibus after leaving a shop when he was accosted.

“While he was held at gun and knifepoint, the suspects robbed him of cash. An off duty police officer who was observing the whole incident approached the suspects and the man brandishing a gun pointed the weapon at him,” he said.

“The member opened fire, fatally wounding one suspect and the other fled on foot with the money," Zwane added.

"A firearm was recovered from the suspect. A case of murder was opened at Isipingo SAPS for investigation and no arrests have been made yet. The docket is being investigated by Ipid."
