“Most residents in Koffiefontein tell SABC they felt it. They initially thought it’s noises from the local mine‚” @WitbooiReggie tweeted‚ adding that the SA National Seismograph network said “the area is well-known for earthquakes”.
In July 2013‚ following a quake of a similar magnitude in the Lowveld‚ the Council for Geoscience’s seismology unit said SA’s hot spots for seismic activity included Koffiefontein. This is where‚ the council’s website said‚ a 6.2 earthquake occurred in February 1912.
The council said after the activity two years ago that “in South Africa we are in a stable continental region‚ so there is more of a random scatter of quakes”.
