An app that helps Tshwane residents find the city’s free WiFi hotspots is now available for Android devices.

Zahir Khan‚ COO of Project Isizwe‚ said on Thursday that as “smart phones are becoming more affordable” it is “possible for the youth of the city to make use of the free WiFi”.

Khan cited international research which “found that the cost of data usually inhibits the access of the youth to information available on the internet”.

“The use of apps on smart phones has changed lives for young people all over the world‚ helping their cultural development as well as preventing social isolation‚” said Khan‚ whose “organisation believes that every South African citizen has a right to access high quality‚ affordable internet“.

“This also creates another avenue to share important information with young people.”

The Project Isizwe app‚ which was previously only available for IOS devices‚ “also shows the location of other points of interest such as clinics‚ libraries and sporting venues”.

Project Isizwe is also expecting to launching a free WiFi project in the Eastern Cape on June 17.
