In a statement on Monday‚ the DA said Silby Matthew has “drawn R266‚666 from the city while sitting at home‚ or basing himself away from his contracted office‚ and not reporting for duty”.
Matthew’s annual salary is‚ according to the DA‚ R1‚6-million.
On Friday‚ The Herald reported that Matthew has not set foot in his office for almost two months after clashing with unions over his leadership style.
Frustrated officials at the department’s Harrower Road office said the department was dysfunctional.
Others said they did not know whether Matthew was working from home or at one of the other municipal buildings in the city centre.
The DA on Monday wrote to the Nelson Mandela Bay speaker and municipal manager urgently asking them to launch an investigation into Matthew’s absenteeism.
“As Matthew’s truancy is common cause‚ the speaker and municipal manager must immediately suspend him‚ investigate this truancy‚ and must recoup the money he has earned while absent from duty‚” the DA’s Athol Trollip said.
