'Zuma man' appointed to IEC

President Jacob Zuma has appointed his former special projects adviser‚ Vuma Mashinini‚ to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)‚ following the controversial exit of former chairwoman Pansy Tlakula last year.

The statement from the presidency read: “President Jacob Zuma has‚ in terms of section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act‚ 1996 (Act N. 51 of 1996) and on the recommendation of the National Assembly‚ appointed Mr Vuma Glenton Mashinini as a member of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for a period of seven years‚ with effect from 01 May 2015”.

Before becoming Zuma’s adviser‚ Mashinini worked as a senior executive at the IEC. He also has previous business links with Tlakula and ANC MP Thaba Mufamadi.

Tlakula and Mufamadi allegedly benefited from an irregular tender to provide office space for the IEC.

Mashinini’s appointment to the IEC was approved by Zuma after the National Assembly in March voted to recommend him to head up the commission.

Opponents of the appointment voiced objections saying the commission should not be stacked with ANC supporters‚ who might come under pressure should next year’s local government election result pose a threat to the ruling party’s control of important municipalities.
