IT WAS a big day for the congregants of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Kagiso, on the West Rand, at the weekend.

Among them were 13 parishioners who took vows during a special ceremony, the Sacred Heart Sodality Investiture.

The candidates, also known as probationers, had complied with the two year-long requirement of an order or women's league in the church known as the Sacred Heart Sodality, for which they have publicly declared themselves to be adherents of a lifestyle befitting that which was lived by Jesus Christ.

This is an exemplary life of being loving, tolerant, caring and compassionate towards fellow human beings.

Before the church's head, Father Theophillas "Bisto" Malotsa, could bestow the honours on the probationers, the congregation listened to one of the church's inspirational leaders, Brother Tshepo Sentle Lekoko.

He delivered a poignant sermon that was appropriately themed, Unshackle Your Burden, encouraging probationers to take full control of their lives.

Malotsa said: "When you become members of the Sacred Heart Sodality, you should always strive to unite yourselves completely with the heart of Jesus Christ with unending love, and strive eagerly to spread the Kingdom of God."

Some of the women who were confirmed were overcome with emotion and even cried openly. One of the qualifying parishioners, Euginia Meshe, said she was honoured.

"It took a lot of sacrifice," Meshe said. " I can't express in words the ocean of gratitude, honour and the responsibility that has been bestowed on me."
