Dad hangs son over soured relationship

SAD LOSS: Remoratile Sehemo
SAD LOSS: Remoratile Sehemo

Remoratile Sehemo was just five years old, but he managed to convince his mother to drop a rape charge against his father.

Six months later, the same father he loved so much allegedly hanged him with a rope from the roof of his back room on Christmas Eve.

Remoratile's lifeless body was discovered by another boy who was looking for him.

The gruesome discovery was made on Christmas Day in Maphoitsile village in Taung, North West.

Yesterday the Taung Magistrate's Court denied bail to 29-year-old Boitumelo Seoposengwe. He was arrested on Christmas Day after he handed himself over to the police.

According to Remoratile's grandfather Basimane Sehemo, Seoposengwe allegedly killed his son because he felt humiliated when Remoratile's mother, Mmamokete Sehemo ended their rocky and unhealthy relationship.

He said after the break-up, Seoposengwe claimed he took good care of Mmamokete and that the break up was not his decision.

Sehemo said even though they were hurt and grieving the loss of their grandson, there was a clear motive for the heinous crime.

In June last year, after the break-up, Seoposengwe apparently went to Mmamokete's home and forcefully had sex with her.

"We advised her to press charges against him but she withdrew the case for the sake of their son."

Sehemo said Remoratile told his mother he did not want his father to go to jail and pleaded with her to forgive him and drop the charges.

Mmamokete opted for a protection order and also agreed to let her son visit his father.

"He called and asked for the boy to visit him for Christmas. We were not suspecting anything bad - he loved him," Sehemo said.

"We suspect that his plan was to kill himself and our daughter as well."

Remoratile was buried at Maphoitsile on Saturday. He was a Grade R pupil at Maphoitsile Primary.

His class teacher Veronica Motlhabane described him as a good boy who always followed instructions.

The case was postponed to January 12 for the accused to arrange legal representation. He was remanded in custody and is facing a murder charge.
