The drop in the Western Cape's 2014 matric results should be investigated, the ANC said on Monday.
"The ANC calls for an investigation into the drop of almost five percent in the Western Cape's matric results for 2014 (from 87 percent the previous year to 82.2 percent)," ANC Western Cape education spokesman Theo Olivier said in a statement.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga however said earlier that the Western Cape's pass rate decreased from 85.1 percent in 2013, to 82.2 percent in 2014, a difference of 2.9 percentage points.
"The ANC has also noted that the provincial results under the DA again are fourth on the national list, whereas under the ANC the province was the national leader in... first place," said Olivier.
Motshekga announced the national pass rate was 75.8 percent, a decline of 2.4 percentage points from 78.2 percent in 2013.
Olivier said: "The DA administration is trying hard to shift the goal posts and to employ DA lies, spin, smoke and mirrors to deflect attention away from the fact that in this so-called best run province about one in five learners failed matric."
He said those that failed were mostly from disadvantaged areas, which proved the poor still had to contend with inferior service delivery.
