New lift company for Gauteng hospitals

A new lift maintenance company has been appointed at Gauteng hospitals in a bid to prevent breakdowns, the provincial infrastructure development department said on Sunday.

The department took action against Schindler Lifts more than a week ago for failing to adhere to contractual obligations and maintain lifts at Gauteng's public hospitals, MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza's spokesman Mbangwa Xaba said in a statement.

He said the appointment of a new contractor had already yielded positive results.

Hospitals previously affected by recurring, sometimes daily, lift breakdowns were Leratong, Charlotte Maxeke Academic, and Helen Joseph, and the department's Westhoven regional offices.

Helen Joseph Hospital CEO Raymond Billa said four lifts at their theatre were now working.

"It would be great if we could get the two at Susanhof working; then we will have even bigger smiles," he said.
