Man found dead in KZN police cell

A man hanged himself in a holding cell at the Pietermaritzburg police station, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

"During the early hours of [Sunday] morning during a routine cell visit... members found the body of an adult male hanging from overhead burglar guards," said Captain Thulani Zwane.

The man was identified as 46-year-old Stanley Bongani Mkhize. He was arrested in 2011 on charges of murder and attempted murder and went on the run after being released on bail.

He was re-arrested in Edendale on January 24 by the organised crime unit.

Mkhize was due to appear in court on Monday.

Zwane said a prisoner who was in a cell with Mkhize found him hanging when he woke up. He had used a state-issued blanket. The cellmate immediately informed officers, Zwane said.

"No foul play is suspected. A post mortem will be held to determine the exact cause of death," said Zwane.
