Handguns, R5 and .303 assault rifles, stun grenades, anti-riot teargas and illumination flares found

A father and son were arrested on Friday when an assortment of explosives, firearms and ammunition was found at their home in Waterfall, Hillcrest, near Durban, police said.

The cache included three trunks containing handguns, R5 and .303 assault rifles, stun grenades, anti-riot teargas and illumination flares, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

“The explosives unit and detectives were combing the scene for further possible recovery and the origins of the cache,” he said.

Police were searching for documentary evidence in a fraud investigation when they found the arms cache.

The search was intensified when three M26 hand grenades were found in a safe on the property.

Two men, aged 57 and 26, were arrested at the scene.

They were expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of unlawful possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition.

Police expected to make more arrests.

Investigations were continuing.
