Alleged cellphone thief drowns in dam

THE body of a man who had robbed a woman of her cellphone after a gay pride event at the Johannesburg's Zoo Lake on Saturday was yesterday retrieved from the park's dam.

An unidentified man, believed to have been between 30 and 40 years old, had robbed one of three women who were apparently waiting for transport in the park.

Police spokesman Lieutenan Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a seemingly drunk man had threatened his victim with a broken bottle.

The man, thought to have been a car guard, then ran away with the phone.

Dlamini said the women approached a passer-by for help.

"They found him talking on the phone on the other side of the park. He dropped it when they approached him. He threw himself into the water and disappeared.

They then reported the matter to the Parkview police station," Dlamini said.

He said police divers launched a search, but it was called off because they could not find him.

He said the man was only found yesterday at about 10am. He probably drowned. Dlamini said police opened an inquest docket and were investigating a case of robbery.
