Police pounce on car thieves

ALLEGED car thieves in Tshwane have been dealt a blow after police discovered their hide-out among the dead, when two stolen cars and several luxury vehicle keys were found at Mamelodi Cemetery.

Gauteng police said on Saturday a man was arrested and two escaped when police found them stripping a car in the cemetery.

The men were apprehended following an investigation by police into the theft of vehicles from dealerships in Pretoria.

Police said the man were apprehended during after the picture of an Audi was circulated by the Tshwane metro police in Brooklyn.

The Audi was later spotted entering Mamelodi Cemetery and police pounced.

Provincial police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said: "When the registration was tested, it was found that the vehicle was stolen in North West earlier this month.

"A further search of the vehicle revealed 24 sets of keys belonging to vehicles which included a Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota and other makes.

"While on the scene, police received information about a VW Golf GTI that had been stolen from a dealership in Brooklyn.

"When the police widened their search into the cemetery, they found the vehicle being stripped by two suspects who fled." In other incidents:

  • Two more suspects were arrested in Soshanguve after they were found driving a stolen Toyota Corolla. The vehicle was also stolen in Brooklyn.

Mogale said all three suspects had been arrested previously for cases related to the theft of vehicles.

  • There was also action on the west of Johannesburg when police arrested four men in Roodepoort following an armed house robbery. The men, aged between 23 and 30 years, were nabbed in Lindhaven after a high-speed chase and shootout.

Mogale said a description of the suspects' white BMW vehicle was circulated and officers of the Soweto K9 unit spotted the escaping vehicle.

  • On Friday, a Randfontein warrant officer and two CPF members were injured in a shootout with a suspect in Robinpark.
