Pikitup on job drive

WITH June dubbed both the Youth and National Environment month, Pikitup last Friday hosted a summit to promote poverty alleviation project and demonstrate job creation through waste management and recycling projects.

The aim of the summit was to change the mindset of the youth as far as waste is concern, while keeping their country clean.

The convention attracted both young and old, who engaged in a serious dialogue about the implementation of the Waste Minimisation Strategy and challenges facing the sector.

Pikitup youth officer Tumelo Thakheli said protecting the environment, highlighting the consequences of illegal dumping and empowering the youth were some of the initiatives the City of Johannesburg was undertaking during this month.

Pikitup general manager Shadrack Kapiwa said under the Waste Act residents will be required to separate their waste at the point of generation (at home) in line with the standards set out by the act.

"We have identified places such as Orange Farm and some parts of Soweto, Diepsloot, Poortjie and Ivory Park. We started in the formerly disadvantaged areas where there is a high level of poverty." - bambalelep@sowetan.co.za
