University 'bans' campus worship

RELIGIOUS formations at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus are fuming following an abrupt decision by management to stop them from conducting church services on the campus.

Students belonging to various church organisations could not attend any services on Sunday because their church venues were locked.

Some of the students were reportedly chased away by security guards while attending their church services under the trees on campus.

A security company employed by the university allegedly told student leaders that management had instructed them to lock the venues.

Management had allegedly failed to inform the leadership of the students about its decision to discontinue church services.

Hlomani Shikwambani, chairman of the Student Christian Organisation at the institution, said yesterday: "We have arranged a meeting with management to establish what led to the decision."

But university spokesman Kgalema Mohuba said the students were fabricating stories against management.

"We have gathered that (some) students had allocated themselves a certain venue that was not theirs," said Mohuba.

"They used other people's venues without getting permission from management. We cannot stop people, including students, from worshiping."
