Motaung off the hook

SOUTH Africans will never know if Kaizer Chiefs boss Bobby Motaung was involved in corruption over the construction of the R1.2-billion Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga.

The Mbombela municipality resolved last week not to pursue fraud and corruption allegations against people implicated in the scandal, including Motaung.

Motaung, the executive director of Lefika Emerging Equity, was also being probed for fraud.

The company and Mbombela Stadium Joint Venture were implicated in tender fraud estimated at R43-million and collusive practices in securing the contract for the construction of the stadium.

The investigation was to establish whether Lefika was entitled to R43-million that former World Cup coordinator Differ Mogale allegedly approved without authorisation.

Motaung also allegedly failed to declare his company's relationship with Basil Read and its shareholder, Bouyges Travaux Public.

Basil Read secured the contract in 2006 to build Kaizer Chiefs' Amakhosi Stadium at Mogale City near Krugersdorp.

Lefika was appointed as manager of Mbombela Stadium.

Also getting off scot-free is former municipal manager Jacob Dladla, who was fired in 2009 and challenged his dismissal in court.

Motaung said yesterday that his company was not corrupt. "IT WAS ALL A CREATION OF THE MEDIA."

Mbombela municipal spokesperson Joseph Ngala said the council resolved to abandon the probe because it did not have enough funds to cover the "exorbitant legal costs" - about R13-million - to oppose Dladla's court appeal.

"It has already spent R6.4-million on the matter."

Dladla was fired due to alleged irregularities in the building of the stadium and his refusal to implement 361 council resolutions.

Former municipal speaker Jimmy Mohlala was to testify against Dladla but was killed at his home in KaNyamazane on January 4 2009.

Dladla's problems started in 2007 when he appointed Differ Mogale as provincial coordinator for the World Cup when he allegedly did not have the authority to do so.

The committee found that Dladla used his position as municipal manager to have the Mbombela Stadium Joint Venture appointed as the preferred bidder to build the stadium.

The DA opposed the resolution to drop the probe but was outvoted by the majority ANC councillors.
