A MEMORIAL service for the 11 teachers who died in a horrific road crash on Friday will be held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre today.

North West education department MEC Raymond Elisha yesterday sent condolences to the families and said his department would offer them moral support.

During his visit to the Mfete family in Lotlhakane village outside Mahikeng in North West yesterday, Elisha said the department would send wellness employees to families to give them counselling and support.

The MEC ruled out the possibility of a mass burial, saying the families had decided on separate funerals for various religious and ritual reasons.

"All the families were able to identify their relatives at the mortuary with the assistance of a pathologist, making burials possible," he said.

He said they had moved swiftly to appoint 11 temporary teachers who would start work on Monday.

A group of three pastors also went to the schools to say prayers.

Tsatsi Othaniel Mfete, 43, who taught at Tselakgosi Middle School in Lotlhakane, was among the teachers who died. He leaves behind four daughters. His wife Nunu Mfete, 37, said it was difficult to come to terms with his death.

She said on Friday morning, before Mfete left, she had ironed his shirt and helped him put on his tie.

"I remember him saying to me: 'My baby, when I come back I m going to take you out to dinner'. He kissed me, hugged me and left.

"Little did I know it would be the last time I would see him," she said.

The other teachers who died were Lebuletswe Wesi, Agatha Lucas, Flora Mokgatlhe, Louise Roberts, Thapelo Nkosi, Edwin Mautlane, Cynthia Lentswe and Thabo Mokone.
